> what's some good testing material for milling test pieces on my hobbyist cnc mill?

For hobby CNC test pieces, the best material depends on what you’re testing: motion/toolpaths, dimensional accuracy, surface finish, or actual metal-cutting capability. I’ll separate those because the “easiest” material isn’t always the most informative.

**Choosing test materials**

I’m comparing machinable wax, HDPE, acetal, and 6061 aluminum for CNC practice. Wax is best for program verification; plastics help assess finish and fit; aluminum is the final capability test.

For a hobby CNC mill, I’d use a progression rather than one material:

- **HDPE** — probably the best cheap general-purpose test stock. It’s easy to machine and fabricate, so it’s good for testing workholding, pockets, contours, drilling, and basic dimensional accuracy. citeturn595531search12turn595531search50 The downside is that it’s relatively soft, so it won’t tell you much about machine rigidity.
- **Acetal / Delrin** — my favorite for **precision test pieces**. It’s harder and more dimensionally stable than HDPE, yet still mills easily and can produce a very good finish. citeturn978323search3turn978323search5 It’s excellent for checking bore sizes, interpolation, backlash, squareness, and repeatability.
- **Machinable wax** — best for proving questionable G-code or learning CAM without abusing tools or the machine. It’s specifically sold for CNC program verification and is designed to machine cleanly. citeturn595531search0turn595531search4 You can also collect the chips and remelt many machinable wax formulations.
- **6061 aluminum** — use this once you want the test to tell you something about your mill's **actual rigidity, spindle, tooling, and feeds/speeds**. Even small desktop CNC mills are designed to machine 6061 under appropriate conditions. citeturn978323search7 It exposes problems that plastic and wax can hide: chatter, tool deflection, poor chip evacuation, and weak workholding.

I'd personally buy some **1/2–1 inch thick Delrin/acetal offcuts**. It behaves enough like a "real" engineering material that measurements mean something, while being much less frustrating than metal.

A useful calibration piece is about **2 × 3 inches** with a faced surface, outside square profile, 1" pocket, circular interpolated bore, narrow slot, a few drilled holes, and a small square boss. Measure all of those afterward with calipers/micrometers. That single part can reveal X/Y scale error, backlash, tram error, tool diameter error, interpolation error, and Z-depth accuracy.

If you tell me **what CNC mill you have, spindle RPM/power, and your usual end-mill diameter**, I can suggest a particularly good test material and test-piece geometry for it.
